Introducing New Research on Pharmacy-Based Care — and How Employers, Payers, and Policymakers Can Take Action

Community pharmacies are a trusted, accessible, and affordable way to help close America's health care gaps, but their full potential often goes untapped. Our new research report shows how employers, payers, and policymakers can partner with pharmacies to lower costs and expand access to care.

U.S. employers are caught in a health care squeeze: Costs are rising at unsustainable rates while employees struggle to access the care they need.

Health care costs are projected to increase by 8% in 2025 — the steepest rise in more than a decade. Meanwhile, roughly 80 million Americans live in areas with inadequate access to primary care.

As employers look for innovative ways to control spending without compromising health care quality or access, one promising solution is hiding in plain sight: the local pharmacy.

Pharmacists can deliver a wide range of clinical services, including preventive care, chronic disease management, test-to-treat services, and mental health support. These services have been shown to reduce health care spending and improve employee health and productivity.

Yet many employers, payers, and policymakers are unaware of the full potential of pharmacy-based care, and adoption of these services remains surprisingly low.

Our new research report, commissioned by the National Association of Chain Drug Stores (NACDS), explores this untapped opportunity, the barriers that limit progress, and strategies that can help scale pharmacy-based care nationwide.

Based on national surveys, employer interviews, and expert roundtables, "Closing the Care Gap: Community Pharmacies as Key Partners in Employer Health Strategies" presents a strategic framework to expand pharmacy-based care and strengthen employee and community health.

In addition to the research report, we also developed three companion briefings that outline key considerations and practical steps specifically for employers, payers, and policymakers.

The employer briefing, "The Business Case for Employer-Pharmacy Partnerships," distills the 35-page research report into a concise, helpful summary of key findings from our research, data on return-on-investment, and four practical actions to help integrate pharmacy-based care into your benefits strategy.
