With federal HIV prevention funding at risk, America is on the brink of reversing decades of progress in the fight against HIV.
In a new op-ed for Contagion Live, the Health Action Alliance’s Co-CEO Stephen Massey discusses how 100 companies across all 50 states are stepping up to support the federal goal of ending HIV by 2030. These businesses are launching awareness campaigns, expanding access to testing and prevention, and driving innovation in care, all while making smart investments in workforce health and community resilience.
But this progress is under threat. A pending Supreme Court decision and proposed federal budget cuts could roll back hard-won gains by weakening access to preventive services like PrEP. Massey warns, “We risk reversing hard-won gains, driving up new transmissions, and abandoning a once-in-a-generation opportunity.”
The business case is clear: Expanding access to HIV prevention and treatment improves lives, lowers health care costs, and strengthens the economy. Massey urges continued federal investment, warning that without it, we risk losing both public health progress and economic advantage.
U.S. Business Action to End HIV was founded in 2022 by the Health Action Alliance, with support from ViiV Healthcare, to mobilize the private sector to help end the HIV epidemic in the U.S.
We offer free tools, resources, and events to help employers educate workers, fight stigma, improve access to HIV prevention and treatment services, and build connections to the communities that need it most.
